What comes to mind when you think of “masculine” or “manly” traits in a person? What about “feminine” traits?
Are these natural in that we are born with them, or are they learned through socialization?
Reflect back on your own socialization as a child. If you are a male, how did your parents treat you as a boy, compared to your female siblings/friends? If you are a female, how did your parents treat you as a girl, compared to how they treated boy children?
Reflect on your life now as an adult. What kind of advertising do you see that is directly trying to sell you something to your particular gender? What messages does the media send about men and women, and what is gender appropriate behavior in typical television sitcoms?
What does it mean to say that gender, like race, is a social construction?
